Potassium
Potassium helps kidneys function normally and it is important nutrient for normal heart, digestive, and muscular function. As excessive use of sodium may deplete the body's stores of the compound, thus a proper balance of potassium in the body depends on sodium. According to research, most people with a healthy diet rich in vegetables and fruits get all of the potassium needed from such sources. However, due to decreased kidney function that often occurs as one ages, the elderly may not be getting enough of the compound from dietary sources. In terms of anti aging, one of the findings has been that plentiful dietary use of potassium from fruits and vegetables throughout life helps preventing bone loss that can lead to osteoporosis. Also, some studies have linked low dietary potassium intake with high blood pressure and increased risk of stroke. Potassium - StudiesAlappan R, Perazella MA, Buller GK, et al.
