Philodendron
Philodendron was one of the plants that NASA studies for their effectiveness in cleaning toxic particles from indoor air. The plant was particularly effective in removing formaldehyde from the air.
Formaldehyde is a chemical found in virtually all indoor environments. Biggest sources for the chemical include urea-formaldehyde foam insulation and particle board or pressed wood products used in manufacturing of furniture.
However, there are many additional, common sources for the chemical.
As a chemical, Formaldehyde irritates the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and throat. Research on the compound also suggests that it also is a highly reactive chemical which combines with protein and can cause allergic contact dermatitis.
Importantly, in studies by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the chemical has strongly been suspected of causing a rare type of throat cancer in long-term occupants of mobile homes.
