N Acetyl L Cysteine

N Acetyl L Cysteine (NAC) is derived from the simple amino acid cysteine and also helps the body produce glutathione, which is considered one of the most important antioxidants in the body.

One of the reasons for this is the fact that Glutathione is produced within cells, particularly by the liver.

A major function of vitamin C is in fact to keep glutathione, L-cysteine, and NAC in reduced form so that they can continue to have their free radical quenching effects.

Studies show that in addition to NAC, also garlic, selenium, alpha-lipoic acid, and L-cysteine can boost cellular glutathione levels.

However, NAC is the more efficiently absorbed and used form of L-cysteine.

As vitamin C helps to enhance the compounds antioxidant qualities, many researchers suggest that if used, the compound should be supplemented together with vitamin C in the diet.
