Melatonin
Melatonin is a a highly potent antioxidant hormone, which has been described as the pacemaker of the aging clock in humans.
Available studies suggest that the importance of maintaining melatonin at youthful levels will help protect against age-related degenerative diseases.
The hormone is secreted by the pineal gland, a pea-size structure at the center of the brain, as our eyes register the fall of darkness.
This helps our bodies regulate our sleep-wake cycles. The most common use of the hormone, so far, has been to hasten sleep and ease jet lag, without the hazards or side effects of prescription sleeping pills.
60 million Americans have sleep disorders, and these can significantly contribute to stress levels people feel, which is one of the aging accelerating factors.
However, the hormone's other uses, beside sleep disorders, are under much research and the hormone has been reported to make people feel better and strengthen the immune system so far.
