Lycopene
Lycopene is part of carotenoid family of compounds that have antioxidant qualities.
In foods, this antioxidant is abundant in red tomatoes, and is also found in guava, rosehip, watermelon and pink grapefruit, for example.
As an antioxidant, this compound has an important role in anti aging regimen that follows antioxidant method for life extension/anti aging purposes.
Antioxidants, as a group, neutralize free radicals, which may damage the body's cells.
The research around Lycopene's anti aging qualities are multiple. For example, studies have shown that high intake of lycopene-containing vegetables prevents the occurrance of certain types of cancer.
Ongoing research has suggested that lycopene may be associated with reduced risk of macular degenerative disease, serum lipid oxidation, as well as cancers of the lung, bladder, cervix and skin.
