Low Sodium Diets

Low sodium diets, which restrict the amount of table salt and salt containing foods, are among the most commonly prescribed diets today.

The low salt diets are commonly used in the treatment of high blood pressure and selected other types of heart, kidney and liver diseases. There are also other benefits of the diet program when used with certain prescription drugs.

It the diet program comes from a doctor, she may give you a printed diet sheet or send you to a registered dietitian. If you’re deciding to restrict salt intake on your own (after consulting with your doctor, naturally), there are other resources, such as books on the subject to help you out.

Following low sodium diets has been made easier by food labeling, which almost always include the amount of salt/sodium content. The cookbooks will help on replacing the salty flavor with other flavors to keep the food tasty enough.

Low Sodium Diets – Books

The best resource for following the low salt diet is your doctor. She knows your situation and can advice on the particulars of the diet program, which may include in pointing you to good books on the subject.

Other resources that may complement the information include mass market books that discuss the low salt diets and offer ready-formulated recipes:

  • Get the Salt Out : 501 Simple Ways to Cut the Salt Out of Any Diet by Ann Louise Gittleman
  • Pocket Guide to Low Sodium Foods by Bobbie Mostyn
  • American Heart Association Low-Salt Cookbook : A Complete Guide to Reducing Sodium and Fat in the Diet by American Heart Association
  • The Everything Low- Salt Cookbook Book: 300 Flavorful Recipes to Help Reduce Your Sodium Intake (Everything: Cooking) by Pamela Rice Hahn
