L-Methionine

L-Methionine is an essential amino acid that participates in a wide range of important biochemical reactions in the body.

As an amino acid, the compound is a precursor in protein synthesis, but also participates in the production of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM or SAMe), L-cysteine, glutathione, taurine and sulfate.

It is important to note that SAM is involved in the synthesis of creatine, epinephrine, melatonin and the polyamines spermine and spermidine, among several other substances important from anti aging perspective.

It has also been suggested that L-Methionine may act as a antioxidant in the body, which appear to account for its possible anti-hepatotoxic activity.

Research suggests that methionine has antioxidant activity by virtue of its sulfur, as well as its chelating ability.

However, much research is still needed into the anti aging perspective of L-Methionine, especially as one of the metabolites of L-methionine, L-homocysteine, has been implicated as a significant factor in coronary heart disease and other vascular diseases.
