Gotu Kola
Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) is a herb used in alternative Ayurvedic medicine as a nerve tonic for improving memory and clarity of thinking.
In research with animals, the herb extract, as an oral treatment of a methanol extract for 14 days, was found to significantly increase anti-oxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx).
In studies with mice, the herb has also been associated with antidepressant and anti-ulcer abilities.
There are several potential chemicals found in the herb that may contribute to the positive health effects, including alkaloids, triterpenes, sterols, tannins, and glycosides.
In addition to the reported potential health benefits, some use stimulants such as Gotu Kola and Ginseng to replace caffeine in their diet.
