Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is a medical procedure that removes the top layers of skin due to abrasion, which helps to reduce irregularities, resulting in a rejuvenated, smoother appearance. The procedure works on acne scars, other scars, sun spots and fine facial wrinkles. During the procedure, specialist 'sands' off the top layer of facial skin, using either a hand-held electrical machine with a small abrading head, or a CO2 or Erbium:YAG laser. After significant recovery time, when the top layer of the skin grows back the new skin is smoother and imperfections are reduced. Although scarring with dermabrasion has been reported to be rare, people with dark complexions may develop permanently discoloured or blotchy skin. As the outer layer of the skin is damaged on the procedure, patients will need to wear high SPF sunblock for six to 12 months after the treatment, at least and avoid certain types of activities that would compromise the healing process.
