Borage Seed Oil
Borage seed oil from Borago officinalis contains GLA, an essential fatty acid which with DHA in ideal balance between them could guard against diseases and age-related disorders.Together, essential fatty acids protect the cardiovascular system, lowering blood pressure, raising good (HDL) cholesterol while lowering bad (LDL) cholesterol and triglyceride levels. From anti aging perspective it is also important to notice that GLA has been suggested to help reverse the effects of aging on fatty acid metabolism, while DHA is essential to the development and maintenance of brain functions, being of crucial importance for children, as well as for the elderly in prevention and treatment of dementia. Borage oil is the richest known source of GLA, containing 23% of the compound. However, research suggests that it is important to have a balance of these two essential fatty acids, for best longevity and health results. From natural food sources, cold water fish varieties contain DHA. Research has also suggested that combination of GLA (Omega-6 fatty acid) with Omega-3 acids, such as EPA, has beneficial health effects, especially on reducing "bad" LDL cholesterol, if done in certain ratios.
