Atkins Diet Induction Phase


Atkins Diet induction phase is the first phase out of the four phases of the diet program. According to the official Atkins web site, the induction phase kick-starts your body into lipolysis/ketosis, switching your metabolism to one that primarily burns fat for energy.

According to Atkins.com, the induction phase has several goals. These goals include:

  • switching your body from a carbohydrate-burning metabolism to a primarily fat-burning metabolism
  • Stabilizing your blood sugar levels
  • Curbing your cravings by stabilizing your blood sugar

    The induction phase lasts a minimum of 14 days. However, according to the official site, the induction phase can last longer, depending on how much weight you need to lose. However, according to Atkins Nutritionals FAQs, at least the following three requirements must be met if the induction phase is continued:

    Your blood chemistries, lipid values, blood pressure or blood sugar levels continue to improve or remain stable and within normal limits.

    You feel well and are experiencing a high energy level, normal sleep patterns and stable moods.

    You are not bored. Boredom could lead to cheating and undermine your efforts.

    In any case, it is important to understand the importance of the induction phase in context of the whole diet program.
