Alpha Linolenic Acid
Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) is an essential fatty acid, essential to human health but cannot be manufactured by the body.
ALA, belongs to a group of fatty acids called omega-3 fatty acids, alongside with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
Once digested, the body converts ALA into EPA and DHA, which are more easily used by the body.
From anti aging regimen viewpoint, it is important to maintain a balance of both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the diet as these two work together for maintaining a healthy body.
Omega-6 acids, however, promote inflammation.
It has been suggested that the typical American diet tends to contain 11 to 30 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids and some researchers believe this imbalance is a factor in the rising rate of inflammatory disorders in the US.
There are several studies done on ALA that have implications on anti aging research.
Some of the studies suggest that people who eat an ALA-rich diet are less likely to suffer a fatal heart attack and have higher HDL ("good") cholesterol levels.
One of this type of diets is the so-called Mediterranean-style diet that emphasizes whole grains, root and green vegetables, daily intake of fruit, fish and poultry, olive and canola oils, and ALA (found in flaxseed oil), along with discouragement of ingestion of red meat and total avoidance of butter and cream.
It has been said that the Mediterranean diet has a good balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
Also, in some studies, women who regularly consume foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids over many years have shown evidence that they may be less likely to develop breast cancer and to die from the disease than women who do not follow such a diet.
