Adult Stem Cell Therapy
Adult stem cell therapy has the potential to be able to repair damaged or defective tissues in the human body.
Unlike embryonic stem cells, which are taken from a developing embryo at the blastocyst stage, adult stem cells, on the other hand, are found in all tissues of the growing human being and also seem to have the stem cell potential to transform themselves into practically all other cell types.
For about 30 years, it has been known that stem cells are present in adults, but it was widely assumed that they could only form cells of a particular tissue, meaning, reprogramming them was considered impossible.
However, pluripotent stem cells have now been discovered in the spinal cord, in the brain, in the connective tissue of various organs, and in the blood of the umbilical cord.
These stem cells have the potential to form principally blood, muscle, and nerve cells.
The special advantage of adult human stem cell therapy is that there are no rejection reactions from the treatment, because the cells are from the same body.
The added benefit of using adult stem cells over embryonic stem cells is that these therapies are already in use.
In 2001, for example, doctors at the Dusseldorf University Clinic carried out a treatment in which they treated a cardiac infarct patient with stem cells from his own body to repair damaged heart tissue, and at least six others have been treated with similar therapy since then.
